What happened
Taiwan stocks (TAIEX, ^TWII) fell 2.49% on Friday to 45,212 after an AI-spending selloff, while Taiwan reported 53 Chinese ships, including the carrier Liaoning, near Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines. Security chief Joseph Wu posted a map of 53 Chinese ships, 34 of them warships, from south of Japan to Taiwan and the Philippines. He called the combined threat to the three places "obvious," while China said the Liaoning's training is routine and aimed at no country. The stock drop mostly followed weak Alphabet and Amazon results that made investors doubt the payoff from huge AI spending.
Why it matters
Taiwan stocks lean heavily on one chipmaker, TSMC, which alone pulled the index down about 360 points on Friday. Reports on the drop blamed AI worries, not the ships. Still, the deployment adds a security risk for an island that makes many of the world's advanced chips. Japan and the Philippines, which also have tense ties with China, were named in the warning.
