What happened
Venezuelan oil drew attention this week after Trump said on Tuesday that Venezuela gifted the US 1 million barrels, though CNN reports the deal defers payment through a US-backed partner, NABEP. The partner first said the US bought the oil at a reduced price, then changed its statement to say it came at no cost to taxpayers. On Thursday, acting president Delcy Rodríguez promised elections run by a "renewed" electoral authority with international monitors, but gave no date. Washington has floated presidential elections in 2027.
Why it matters
Venezuela is pumping about 1.25 million barrels a day, its most since 2019, and the US now has rights to buy a share of that crude at a discount. Whether the oil is a gift or a cheap purchase shows how closely oil deals and politics are tied together. A fair, monitored election could decide how safe long-term oil investments in Venezuela are.
