What happened
Shekel (USD/ILS) could swing up to 3% after Tuesday's tight Israel election, JPMorgan estimates, with betting markets favoring Eisenkot over Netanyahu. Israelis vote Tuesday, with polls open from 7am to 10pm local time and first signs of the result expected within hours of closing. The final TV polls give the opposition bloc led by former army chief Gadi Eisenkot 52 to 56 of 120 seats and Netanyahu's bloc about 50, so neither clearly reaches the 61 needed to govern. JPMorgan says an opposition win could strengthen the shekel, Israel's currency, while another Netanyahu government could weaken it.
Why it matters
The shekel has gained 25% since October 2023, so a swing of up to 3% would be a notable move for anyone holding Israeli stocks, bonds or dollars. Investors say an opposition win could lower the extra return they demand for holding Israeli assets (the risk premium). Because neither side is near a clear majority, coalition talks could take weeks, which keeps the outcome uncertain.
