What happened
Range Resources (RRC) stock rose about 16% on Monday to roughly $52.43 after EQT agreed to buy the company in an all-stock takeover, a 20.6% premium to Friday's close. Each Range share becomes 0.987 EQT shares, valuing Range at about $12.8 billion. Counting debt, the combined company is worth over $50 billion and would produce more than 9 billion cubic feet of gas a day, versus 7.2 billion for rival Expand Energy in 2025. EQT shares fell roughly 3% to 4%, a common reaction when a buyer issues lots of new stock. The deal is expected to close in early 2027.
Why it matters
Range Resources (RRC) is being bought by a rival aiming to be the top US gas producer, a sign that gas companies expect demand to keep rising. Natural gas heats homes and makes electricity, and the US government's energy forecaster expects record gas exports in 2026 plus rising power needs from data centers (per). EQT says the combined company could break even at gas prices below $2 per million heat units. The deal still needs approval from regulators and shareholders.
