What happened
Anthropic (ANT) filed for a Nasdaq IPO on Monday, showing $16.3B in first-half revenue and an $80.7B net loss, mostly non-cash accounting charges, with a listing targeted for the week of Nov. 16. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley lead a group of 22 banks on the deal. Sales were about 14 times higher than a year earlier. About $72 billion of the loss is an accounting adjustment on convertible notes (IOUs that can turn into shares), not cash spent. Anthropic also earned its first operating profit, $974 million, in the second quarter.
Why it matters
Anthropic is the maker of the Claude AI assistant, and its filing is the first detailed look at the finances of one of the world's most valuable AI companies. It was valued at $965 billion in May, and talk of a $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion IPO value could make it one of the largest stock offerings ever. If it lists, everyday investors could own a piece of a top AI company for the first time.
