Novo Nordisk (NVO) Jumps 6% as Q3 2026 Beat Lifts Outlook

Novo Nordisk (NVO) shares rose about 6% premarket after a Q3 2026 earnings beat and a higher full-year outlook, driven by Wegovy pill and GLP-1 demand.

  • Q3 sales reached DKK 79.2 billion, up 4% at constant exchange rates, above the DKK 73.6 billion consensus.
  • Adjusted operating profit rose 27% at constant rates to DKK 31.7 billion, versus DKK 28.6 billion expected.
  • 2026 adjusted sales and profit growth is now guided at -2% to +2%, up from -6% to flat.

Lead

Novo Nordisk raised its 2026 outlook on Wednesday, November 4, after third-quarter sales and profit beat expectations on continued growth in its GLP-1 obesity and diabetes franchise. The Danish drugmaker's U.S.-listed shares (NVO) gained as much as 6.6% to about $42.86 in premarket trading. The move partly offsets a year-to-date decline of roughly 13%.

What Happened to Novo Nordisk Stock After Q3 Earnings?

Novo Nordisk stock rose about 6% before the U.S. open after the company reported results that exceeded consensus on revenue, operating profit and its newest product launch.

Net sales for the quarter were DKK 79.2 billion, about $11.9 billion. That was up 6% on a reported basis and 4% at constant exchange rates. Adjusted operating profit was DKK 31.7 billion, up 27% at constant rates.

Part of the profit increase reflects an easier comparison. Novo booked about DKK 9 billion in company-wide transformation costs in the third quarter of 2025, which depressed that year's base.

What Drove the Earnings Beat?

Volume growth in GLP-1 drugs, led by obesity treatments in the United States and international markets, drove the beat, with the Wegovy pill the standout.

The oral version of Wegovy, now launched in the U.S., the UAE, the UK and Germany, generated DKK 5.4 billion in sales. The consensus figure was roughly DKK 4.5 billion. Cumulative prescriptions since launch have passed 8 million.

Injectable products also beat forecasts. Wegovy injections contributed DKK 20.4 billion and Ozempic DKK 29.7 billion. Novo said the Wegovy franchise retains a share above 50% of new patient starts in the U.S. branded obesity market.

Why Did Novo Nordisk Raise Its 2026 Outlook?

Novo raised its guidance because stronger GLP-1 sales and lower restructuring costs have narrowed the range of likely outcomes for the year.

The company now expects adjusted sales and adjusted operating profit to change by between -2% and +2% at constant exchange rates. The previous range was a decline of up to 6%, ending at flat. The raised midpoint implies a stabilization of the business after a year of price pressure, a leadership change and a restructuring.

Competitive and Strategic Context

The quarter lands as Eli Lilly (LLY) holds the lead in the U.S. obesity market. Lilly has overtaken Novo on U.S. sales and has also raised its own full-year outlook. Its oral weight-loss drug, Foundayo, has doubled U.S. prescriptions but still fell short of expectations.

Novo's pipeline remains a point of debate. CagriSema, its next-generation obesity candidate, failed to outperform Lilly's existing treatments in trials, which has limited confidence in a second growth leg beyond semaglutide.

Chief Executive Mike Doustdar said Novo continues to hold a dominant share in its categories even as competition has intensified. He cautioned that a recovery cannot be judged on a single quarter.

Market Reaction

The premarket gain follows a year in which Novo Nordisk shares have lagged the broader healthcare sector on pricing concerns, share losses to Lilly and pipeline setbacks. The beat on the Wegovy pill gives the market the first hard evidence that the oral formulation can widen the patient base. The wider range of guidance outcomes also removes the risk of a double-digit sales decline that had weighed on the stock.

What Comes Next for Novo Nordisk?

The next test is whether the Wegovy pill's early uptake holds as it reaches more markets and as Lilly's oral rival gains traction. Pricing in the U.S. remains the main swing factor for 2027. Direct-to-consumer cash-pay channels and government-negotiated prices are lowering net revenue per prescription even as volumes rise.

Novo's sales guidance still implies flat to slightly lower revenue for the full year at the midpoint. Growth in the fourth quarter will need to come from volume and new launches rather than price.

Outlook

Novo Nordisk has moved from a guided decline to a guided range centered on flat sales and profit. The Wegovy pill, a 27% rise in adjusted operating profit and the lapping of last year's restructuring charge drove the change. Competition from Lilly, price erosion in the U.S. and the CagriSema setback remain the constraints on a sustained rerating.
