Fiserv (FISV) Jumps 12% on Q3 Beat, $1B Savings Target

Fiserv shares rose 12.3% to $58.31 on Nov. 3 after a Q3 2026 earnings beat, a doubled $1 billion Project Elevate savings goal and a $500 million buyback restart.

  • Adjusted EPS of $1.75 beat the $1.72 consensus; adjusted revenue slipped 1% to $4.85 billion.
  • Project Elevate savings target doubled to $1 billion from $500 million, with most new savings arriving beyond 2027.
  • A $6.45 billion goodwill impairment drove a GAAP loss of $11.17 per share.

Lead

Fiserv (NASDAQ: FISV) closed up $6.38, or 12.3%, on Tuesday, Nov. 3, after the payments and financial technology company reported third-quarter 2026 results that topped Wall Street's earnings estimate. The stock had been up about 7% in premarket trading. The S&P 500 gained 0.4% in a session led by technology shares ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.

The company posted adjusted earnings of $1.75 per share against a consensus of $1.72, down 14% from $2.04 a year earlier. It reaffirmed its 2026 adjusted EPS outlook of $7.20 to $7.40 and its organic revenue guidance of a 1% decline to flat. Management also said it will resume share repurchases earlier than expected.

What Happened in Fiserv's Third Quarter?

Fiserv's organic revenue was flat year over year, in line with expectations, while adjusted revenue fell 1% to $4.85 billion. GAAP revenue was $5.20 billion, also down 1%. Adjusted operating margin was 31.2%, compared with 37.0% a year earlier.

Merchant Solutions adjusted revenue fell 3% and organic revenue fell 2%. Small-business revenue declined 1% organically, weighed by lower activity in Argentina and weaker hardware sales. Financial Solutions organic revenue rose 2%, the segment's first positive quarter this year after a 4% decline over the first nine months. The CEO said net attrition in banking is down more than 25% year to date.

Clover, the company's flagship point-of-sale platform, saw gross payment volume rise 9% as reported and 11% excluding a previously disclosed gateway conversion. Processing revenue rose 12%, but total Clover revenue grew only 1%. Management expects a return to double-digit Clover revenue growth in the fourth quarter as prior-year comparisons normalize.

The quarter's GAAP result was a loss of $11.17 per share. A non-cash goodwill impairment of $6.45 billion, or $12.04 per share, reflected the sustained decline in Fiserv's share price and market capitalization.

Why Did Fiserv Stock Surge Despite Falling Revenue?

The stock rose because the report signaled stabilization after a year of reset expectations, backed by a larger efficiency program and a return of capital. Three elements drove the move.

First, Project Elevate, the company's cost and automation program, was raised to $1 billion from $500 million. The additional savings come from consolidating architecture, deploying artificial intelligence in operations and software development, and decommissioning more than a dozen noncore products. The incremental savings are back-end weighted and arrive largely beyond 2027.

Second, the buyback. Fiserv plans to repurchase $500 million of stock in the fourth quarter. Gross debt to adjusted EBITDA stood at 3.1x at quarter-end, with a year-end target of about 3.0x, so the repurchase fits inside the existing leverage plan.

Third, the guidance held. Reaffirming the full-year range after a difficult 2026 reduced fears of another cut. Fiserv shares had fallen sharply over the past year, which magnified the reaction to a modest beat.

What Does the Fourth-Quarter Outlook Imply?

Management guided to a clear acceleration in the final quarter. Merchant Solutions organic revenue is expected to grow 6% to 8%, in line with medium-term targets. Financial Solutions organic growth should be similar to the third quarter's 2%, though adjusted revenue in that segment will decline by a low-single-digit percentage because of divestitures.

The guidance carries a notable test. Nine-month organic revenue is down 3%, so the fourth-quarter rebound has to be substantial to land inside the full-year range. Management said second-half initiatives are on track to support it.

Free cash flow over the first nine months was $2.04 billion, compared with $2.88 billion a year earlier, which leaves less room than in prior years for buybacks beyond the fourth-quarter program.

Strategic Context

Fiserv is rebuilding around Clover and a leaner cost base. The company plans to launch Clover for Enterprise in 2027, unifying card-present and e-commerce acceptance for larger merchants and addressing a growth constraint in the platform. Management said banking revenue should improve within nine to 12 months as lower attrition feeds through to results, and it expects adjusted operating margin to trend toward 37% over the long term.

Full 2027 guidance will come with the next earnings report. Management said nothing has changed in its medium-term segment growth targets.

Outlook

Fiserv's rally rests on stabilization rather than growth. Organic revenue was flat, margins remain well below last year, and the fourth quarter must deliver a sharp merchant rebound to meet guidance. The $1 billion Project Elevate target and the $500 million repurchase give the company two levers to support earnings per share in the interim. The next checkpoints are fourth-quarter Clover revenue growth, the pace of banking attrition and the 2027 outlook.
