What happened
Lyft (LYFT) stock fell 7.35% on Friday to close at $16.53 after third-quarter revenue of $1.82 billion missed estimates, hit by $69.1 million in legal, tax and regulatory charges. Sales still grew 8% from a year ago, but analysts expected $1.92 billion. Lyft also posted a 3-cent per-share loss when analysts expected a 20-cent profit. Without the charges, sales would have been about $1.9 billion, and riders and rides each grew 10% to records. Its own forecast points to a profit margin of about 3.5% next quarter, slightly below this quarter's 3.6%.
Why it matters
Lyft runs a ride-hailing app, so its results show whether people keep paying for rides. Demand looks strong, with the total value of rides booked up 17%, but the drop shows investors also want profit to grow faster. One-time legal and tax bills can change the headline numbers, so the reported miss is smaller than it first looks. Anyone whose savings or retirement funds hold Lyft shares saw them lose value.
