What happened
Lam Research (LRCX) stock rose about 10% to $204 on Friday after its board approved a $25 billion buyback, as chip stocks rebounded from Thursday's 12% rout. Chip stocks had fallen about 12% on Thursday on worries that Democratic midterm wins could bring tougher AI rules and slow data center building. The plan has no end date and does not force Lam to buy any set amount of shares. Sources differ on the size of Friday's gain, from about 7% to 11% at different times of day.
Why it matters
Lam Research makes some of the machines used to build computer chips, so its shares are a way to read how strong AI-related chip demand is. A buyback, where a company uses its own cash to purchase its shares, signals confidence. Lam reported a record $3.24 billion of free cash flow (cash left after expenses) in its latest quarter, per. The plan is permission to buy, not a promise.
