What happened
Unity Software (U) stock jumped as much as 22% in premarket trading on Thursday, and traded near $47 midday, after strong third-quarter earnings and a Q4 revenue forecast far above Wall Street's. Sales rose 32% to $622 million, and Unity earned $122 million, its first profit under standard accounting rules (GAAP) since going public. Its Vector ad tool grew 126%. Its Q4 sales forecast of $683–$691 million is far above the $601 million analysts expected. Shares gave back part of the premarket gain once regular trading began.
Why it matters
Unity makes the software behind many mobile and video games, and this report shows its advertising business can grow fast and now turn a profit. That eases worries about its past losses, and the company holds about $2.65 billion in cash. Its game-ad rival AppLovin also rose 31% the same day, so the move reflects the whole mobile ad market. Unity's tools for game creators grew only 8%, far slower than its ad business.
