What happened
DuPont (DD) stock rose 8.6% to $153.46 on Tuesday after the company beat third-quarter profit estimates and raised its 2026 outlook, with $250 million more in buybacks planned. Profit after removing one-time items (adjusted earnings) was $2.09 a share, above the $1.87 analysts expected. Sales grew 4% to $1.87 billion, helped by demand for healthcare, water and aerospace products. DuPont now expects 2026 adjusted profit of $7.47 to $7.52 a share.
Why it matters
DuPont's results show its healthcare, water and aerospace customers are buying more, and the company now expects a stronger year than before. Higher profit expectations, plus buying back its own shares, can raise the value of each remaining share. Most similar chemical companies fell the same day, so the gain was specific to DuPont rather than a sector-wide move.
