What happened
Expedia (EXPE) stock fell about 9% in after-hours trading on Wednesday after its fourth-quarter revenue forecast of $3.69–$3.75 billion came in slightly below analyst expectations, despite a raised full-year outlook. Expedia now expects customers to spend $131.4 billion to $131.9 billion on trips booked through its sites this year, up from $129.5 billion to $130.8 billion. For the last three months of the year, it expects that spending to grow only 3.3% to 5.2%, compared with 11% in the third quarter. Its finance chief blamed the US midterm elections and unrest in the Middle East and Europe.
Why it matters
Expedia, one of the world's largest online travel booking companies, is signalling that travel growth is slowing even though people are still taking trips. The stock had also gained about 10% earlier on Wednesday, so a small miss on the next-quarter forecast hit hard. Rival Booking Holdings has also guided to slower fourth-quarter bookings growth of 2% to 4%, which suggests the slowdown is not just Expedia's.
