What happened
AppLovin (APP) stock rose about 30% to roughly $355 on Thursday after record third-quarter earnings beat forecasts and the company guided fourth-quarter sales well above Wall Street's expectations. Sales were $2.18 billion, up 55% from a year ago, and adjusted EBITDA (a measure of operating profit) was $1.84 billion. Both beat the company's own forecast (guidance) of up to $2.085 billion and $1.74 billion. It expects fourth-quarter sales of $2.365 billion to $2.395 billion, above the $2.25 billion analysts expected. It also raised its share buyback plan by $3.2 billion.
Why it matters
AppLovin sells software that helps app and game makers find users and earn money from ads, so its results show how much advertisers are spending on mobile apps. Sales growing 55% suggests that spending is still strong. A buyback means the company uses its own cash to purchase its shares, which can support the price. Rival Unity also jumped after its own results, so the strength was not limited to one company.
