What happened
Zebra Technologies (ZBRA) stock fell about 10% to $325 on Tuesday after higher memory costs cut its gross margin to 46%, even though third-quarter sales and profit beat estimates. Sales rose 22.3% to $1.61 billion, and Zebra raised its 2026 sales growth forecast to about 17%. But gross margin, the share of each sale left after product costs, fell to 46% from 48.2% as memory chips cost more. Memory costs rose more than $50 million in the quarter, and price increases covered about half. Its fourth-quarter profit forecast midpoint, $5.20 a share, sat just below analysts' $5.21.
Why it matters
Zebra Technologies makes the scanners and handheld computers that warehouses and stores use every day, so its results show how well a widely used type of business hardware is selling. The drop shows investors are watching profit margins as closely as sales. Zebra now expects memory costs to be about $145 million this year, up from $120 million, and has raised prices on its mobile computers.
