What happened
Marriott (MAR) stock rose 4.3% to a record close of $416.30 on Monday after the hotel company beat third-quarter profit estimates and raised its 2026 outlook as US hotel demand grew. Profit excluding one-off items (adjusted earnings) was $3.02 a share, up from $2.47 a year earlier and above the roughly $2.83 analysts expected. Revenue per available room (RevPAR), a key measure of how much money each hotel room earns, rose 7.4% in the US and Canada and 6.5% worldwide. Marriott now expects global RevPAR to grow 4.5% to 5% this year.
Why it matters
Marriott's results suggest travel demand is holding up, as US and Canada room revenue per available room grew 7.4% and the company raised its yearly outlook. Management said the World Cup gave a lift in June and July, so part of the strength may not repeat. Marriott also has a record pipeline of more than 634,000 rooms planned, which points to more fee income ahead.
