What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) fell 7.6% to $104.77 on Monday after Iran-Qatar peace talks raised hopes of ending the US-Israeli war, the sharpest oil drop in three months. Iran's president said the supreme leader gave the government certain powers to negotiate, and a draft peace proposal is circulating. US crude fell 7.3% to $96.46. Exxon (XOM) shares closed about 4% lower and Kosmos Energy (KOS), a smaller producer, about 13% lower, though Kosmos also missed profit estimates that day.
Why it matters
Oil prices feed into petrol, diesel and shipping costs, so a swing this big matters well beyond traders. Oil is still up about 45% since the war began in late February, so a real peace deal could ease those costs, while failed talks could push prices back up. Oil company shares such as Exxon and Kosmos tend to move with crude, which is why both fell.
