What happened

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) raised its cash rate 0.25 points to 4.85% on Tuesday, an 18-year high, in a 6–3 vote as inflation hit 4.3% and the Middle East war lifted oil prices. Three of the nine board members wanted to leave the rate at 4.60%. Prices rose 4.3% in the year to September, up from 4.0% a month earlier, as fuel costs jumped. The bank now expects underlying inflation to stay above 3% until late 2027, about three quarters later than it first thought.

Why it matters

The Reserve Bank of Australia's fifth hike this year makes borrowing more expensive for people with variable-rate home loans, while savers can earn more. The bank is trying to slow price rises driven by higher fuel and energy costs from the Middle East conflict. It expects unemployment to climb from 4.7% to 5.1% by late 2028, a sign it expects higher rates to cool the economy.
