What happened
Rivian (RIVN) stock rose 7.6% to $13.08 on Monday after UBS upgraded it to Buy with a $17 target, saying the recent selloff is a chance ahead of its R2 SUV ramp. UBS analyst Joseph Spak said early demand for the R2 looks solid and expects Rivian's car business to start making a profit on each vehicle sold (positive gross margin) by year-end. Earlier in the day the stock was up only about 4% before gains widened. CrowdStrike (CRWD) also won a Deutsche Bank upgrade to Buy with a $300 target, rose about 3% before the market opened, but was down about 3% by mid-morning as cybersecurity shares fell.
Why it matters
Rivian is an electric-vehicle maker that is still losing money, including $913 million in the third quarter, and its shares had fallen about 20% in three months. The UBS call matters because it points to the new R2 SUV as the product that could turn the car business profitable. UBS also said Rivian should not need new money before 2029, which eases worries about running low on cash.
