What happened
Check Point Software (CHKP) stock fell 7% in premarket trading on Monday from a $152.11 close after missing Q3 revenue estimates, with its CEO saying recovery is taking longer than anticipated. Sales for the quarter were $669.8 million, down 1% from a year ago and just under the roughly $672 million analysts expected. Profit per share of $2.49 matched forecasts. By late morning the drop had narrowed to about 5%, near $145 a share. Brokerage TD Cowen also cut its rating to Market Perform from Outperform.
Why it matters
Check Point is one of the best-known makers of firewalls, the security gear that protects company networks, so its slow recovery is a signal for the whole sector. Customers are buying fewer new firewall devices, while its subscription services keep growing. Its own sales forecast for the next quarter also came in below what analysts had hoped for. That has left investors less sure about when growth will return.
