What happened
The ISM manufacturing index rose 1 point to 55.5 in October and beat forecasts on Monday, as factory production hit its highest level since 2021 while orders kept growing. The survey asks factory managers about orders and output, and anything above 50 means growth, which has now lasted 10 straight months. The production gauge rose to 59 from 56.7 in September. Factories also added workers for a fourth month, the longest streak since early 2022. Costs eased slightly but remain high, with the prices gauge at 75.2 versus 77.9.
Why it matters
The ISM manufacturing index matters because factories give an early signal of how the wider US economy is doing. A reading of 55.5 points to solid demand, busy production lines and steady hiring. But the mood is not all good: 66% of survey comments were negative, with managers citing price swings, longer delivery times and tariffs. High input prices can feed through to what shoppers pay later.
