What happened

Alphabet (GOOGL) stock fell 12.6% to $283.82 on Thursday after the Google parent reported negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion as AI spending soared, wiping out nearly $500 billion in value. Alphabet's cloud business sold 103% more than a year ago, reaching $30.7 billion, but sales from Google Search grew 12%, less than analysts expected. Free cash flow, the cash left after paying for investments, went negative because Alphabet spent $51.4 billion on data centers and chips, more than the $42.3 billion its operations brought in. It was the biggest one-day drop since Alphabet went public in 2004, beating the 11.6% fall of March 2020.

Why it matters

Alphabet's results show how costly the AI race has become, even for one of the world's richest companies. Investors are asking when spending of about $200 billion this year will turn into steady profits, while AI chatbots may be pulling people away from Google Search. Cloud sales doubling shows demand for AI computing is real, but the bills are arriving first.
