What happened
Brent crude oil (BZ=F) fell 1.1% to $114.05 on Thursday as traders weighed new Iran diplomacy against Guards' claims that three tankers hit mines near Hormuz. Iran's Revolutionary Guards say the ships struck mines on an unauthorized route south of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that carries much of the world's oil, within the past 24 hours. On Sunday, Iranian lawmaker Mousa Ahmadi said prices could top $150 a barrel if war resumes. President Trump says Iran is faking the hits to lift prices before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
Why it matters
Brent crude is the global oil price that feeds into petrol, diesel and shipping costs, so big swings can show up in household bills. At about $116 on Wednesday, it was roughly 80% higher than a year ago. The dispute over whether the attacks are real, and whether talks or new strikes follow the Nov. 3 vote, keeps traders pricing in supply risk.
