What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) rose 1.3% to $115.59 a barrel on Wednesday after Houthis claimed a missile strike on a Saudi refinery, as the US-Iran standoff dragged on and Putin hosted Iran's president. Putin met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the Kremlin on Tuesday, on the sidelines of a gas exporters' summit in Moscow. Pezeshkian said the region could solve its problems without the US, and trade between the two countries grew 10.4% in the first eight months of 2026. The US still blockades Iranian oil, and the Strait of Hormuz, a sea route for about a fifth of the world's energy, remains under attack.
Why it matters
Brent crude, the world's main oil price benchmark, is holding above $115 a barrel, which keeps fuel and shipping costs high for households and businesses. The Moscow meeting shows Iran leaning on Russia while talks with Washington stay stuck. US military strike options are reportedly waiting until after the November 3 midterm elections, so supply worries could last.
