What happened
NZ dollar (NZD/USD) fell about 1.5% to 55.9 US cents on Wednesday after New Zealand's central bank (RBNZ) held rates at 2.75% in a 4-3 surprise, but signaled more hikes. The bank raised rates in July and September, and 22 of 27 economists expected a third rise. Four of seven decision-makers chose to wait, citing inflation of 3.7% (lower than expected), slow wage growth and a weak recovery. Three wanted 3%.
Why it matters
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand sets the base cost of mortgages and business loans, and its surprise pause also pushed the NZ dollar lower. A weaker dollar makes imported goods and fuel pricier, which can keep inflation high. The bank says tighter policy is still likely, so the rate rises may not be over. Its next decision, in December, comes with fresh forecasts.
