Iran War Cost Rises to $47B as Oil Price Worries Grow

CBS News2 min read6 sources

How much has the Iran war cost the US?

The US Iran war has cost $47.1B through mid-October, over 25% above July's $37.5B estimate, as replacing used munitions drove the bill, Pentagon data reported Tuesday show.

Key numbers

War cost to mid-October$47.1B+25% vs July
July estimate$37.5BHegseth, July
Munitions replacement$29Blargest share of bill
CBO added monthly cost$2B–$3Bwhile fighting continues
Brent crude$113.67+18.21% in 1 month

What happened

The US Iran war has cost $47.1B through mid-October, over 25% above July's $37.5B estimate, as replacing used munitions drove the bill, Pentagon data reported Tuesday show. About $29B is for replacing missiles and other munitions already used, $6.1B for lost equipment and $11.9B for running costs such as troop support. The total leaves out damage to US bases in the Middle East from Iranian missile and drone attacks. Oil is also high, with Brent crude near $114 a barrel, about 18% higher than a month ago.

Why it matters

The Iran war cost matters because the bill is paid with government money, and it keeps growing. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) expects $2B to $3B more each month while fighting continues, which adds to government borrowing. Meanwhile, expensive oil raises fuel costs for households and businesses just before the 3 November US elections.
