What happened

Rocket Lab (RKLB) stock rose 8% to $58.31 on Tuesday, its third straight gain, on Neutron rocket progress as key parts shipped to Virginia and defense satellite awards topped $1.3B. The rally followed a mid-October drop, when the company said Neutron, its new large reusable rocket, would not fly until 2027. On Tuesday it sent the rocket's second stage and thrust module (the part that sits on the launch pad) by barge to Virginia for testing. Its two Space Development Agency satellite contracts, worth $816M and $515M, add up to more than $1.3B.

Why it matters

Rocket Lab is one of the few U.S. companies building a rocket big enough to compete with SpaceX, so Neutron's schedule shapes how investors value it. The stock is still down 17% this year, so the three-day rise recovers only part of the fall. Government satellite contracts give the company work and a record backlog of $2.36B while the rocket is delayed.
