What happened
Cerebras (CBRS) stock rose 10% to $119.31 on Tuesday after Oracle said it will offer Cerebras AI inference chips on Oracle Cloud from 2027, adding a major cloud customer. Oracle announced the plan at its AI World event, and no financial terms were disclosed. Inference means running a trained AI model to answer a question. On Wednesday, shares fell back, with reports putting the drop at 4% to 10%, after short seller Culper Research, a firm that profits when a stock drops, claimed the chips wear out faster than Cerebras says; the company had not responded.
Why it matters
Cerebras depends heavily on OpenAI, which has committed to 750 megawatts of its inference capacity, a big part of $25.4 billion in signed sales not yet booked. Oracle's cloud gives the chip maker another large route to customers, though Oracle also offers Nvidia, Google and SambaNova options. The plan covers calendar 2027 and is not a binding commitment.
