What happened
Ross Stores (ROST) stock rose 2.1% on Monday after UBS upgraded it to Buy and set a $315 price target, saying its sales per store are catching up to TJX. Since 2017, TJX's sales per store (store productivity) grew 44%, while Ross's grew 24%. UBS expects Ross to close the gap and grow sales about 8.5% a year, roughly 2.6 percentage points faster than Wall Street expects. Shares briefly rose as much as 3.4% in the morning before settling lower.
Why it matters
Ross Stores is being judged by UBS as a chain that can sell more from each of its stores. UBS expects profit per share to grow about 15% a year, 6.9 percentage points faster than it forecast before. If that proves right, profits could end up well above what most analysts expect, though forecasts are not guarantees.
