Why did French bond yields fall after Moody's?

French 10-year bond yields fell to about 4.9% on Monday after Moody's kept France at Aa3 instead of downgrading it, easing fears that had pushed yields to a high of 5.14%.

What happened

French 10-year bond yields fell to about 4.9% on Monday after Moody's kept France at Aa3 instead of downgrading it, easing fears that had pushed yields to a high of 5.14%. Moody's is one of the big agencies that grade how safe a country is to lend to. Bond investors had expected a downgrade, and Moody's also left its negative outlook in place, so a cut is still possible. It said conditions have worsened, with slower growth, a wider deficit and protests that could make fixing the budget harder.

Why it matters

France's borrowing costs matter because the higher they go, the more tax money the government spends on interest instead of services. The reprieve may be temporary: Moody's rating assumes parliament passes a 2027 budget that trims the deficit from 5.4% to 5% of the economy. If that fails, a downgrade becomes more likely, and S&P is due to review France on 27 November.
