What happened
Viking Therapeutics (VKTX) stock jumped 36% to $40.85 on Tuesday after its VK2735 obesity drug showed patients kept up to 97% of weight lost after switching from weekly to monthly or biweekly injections. VK2735 targets the same two hunger-regulating hormones — GLP-1 and GIP — as Eli Lilly's Zepbound and Novo Nordisk's Wegovy, and had already shown 16–19% body-weight loss after 21 weeks of once-weekly shots. In the 12-week maintenance phase, patients switching to every-other-week dosing kept 90% of their weight loss on average; monthly users kept 85%, versus only 61% for those given a dummy injection. Both Phase 3 trials — VANQUISH-1 (roughly 4,500 patients) and VANQUISH-2 (roughly 1,000) — are fully enrolled, with results expected around mid-2027.
Why it matters
Viking Therapeutics' results matter because staying on obesity drugs is the central challenge — patients who find weekly injections inconvenient often stop and regain weight. VK2735 showed it can preserve most of its weight loss with injections as infrequent as once a month, something no currently approved injectable obesity drug offers. If these results hold in Phase 3, Viking would enter the $66 billion global obesity market with a concrete convenience argument against the weekly Zepbound and Wegovy.
