What happened
U.S. diesel hit a record $6.53 a gallon Monday, up 77% from a year ago, as Russian refinery losses and a US-Iran war choked supply, pushing Trump to back an export ban. The national average climbed from $5.97 on September 7 to $6.53 by September 21, topping the prior all-time record of $5.81 set in June 2022. Ukrainian drones have struck over 50 Russian refineries since March, dropping output to a 21-year low, while the US-Iran conflict blocked the Strait of Hormuz and pulled US diesel exports to a record 1.9 million barrels a day as Europe replaced lost Russian supply. Treasury Secretary Bessent said the White House is studying a full or partial ban under the IEEPA law, which Trump can invoke without a congressional vote.
Why it matters
Diesel prices directly set what Americans pay for nearly everything they buy — it powers the trucks that move food, the farm equipment that grows it, and the machines that build homes. At $6.53 a gallon, trucking firms are warning of profit collapses and independent drivers face bankruptcy, costs that feed into grocery bills within weeks. An export ban could briefly ease domestic prices but risks triggering a global diesel shortage that drives prices back up and damages the refining industry the US depends on.
