What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) rose 1.4% to $101.51 on Tuesday after Trump signaled readiness to meet Iran's Pezeshkian at the UN General Assembly, reviving supply-normalization hopes. President Trump declared his readiness on Sunday, September 20, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Tuesday that no meeting had been formally scheduled yet. Qatar, acting as back-channel mediator between Washington and Tehran, relayed Iran's seven formal conditions to Washington on September 20 — including lifting the naval blockade, easing sanctions, and unfreezing frozen assets. Both leaders are in New York through September 28, making a first head-of-state exchange between the two governments possible at any moment.
Why it matters
Brent crude has gained 41% this year as the 2026 Iran war removed millions of barrels from global markets, pushing fuel costs higher for airlines, consumers, and governments worldwide. A deal reopening the Strait of Hormuz and easing sanctions could return an estimated 1.5 million or more barrels per day to supply — enough to drag prices materially lower. Every major economy would benefit from cheaper energy, but oil producers and energy companies that have profited from elevated prices face significant headwinds if a deal is struck.
