What happened
Intel (INTC) stock jumped 6% on Monday after the chipmaker announced a joint Micro LED advanced packaging partnership with AUO Optronics, targeting TSMC's lead in co-packaged optics for AI data centers. The deal is built around Intel's patent for an IC Package with Micro LEDs, which embeds chips into glass substrates and connects them through tiny light-conducting channels called through-glass vias (TGVs), moving data faster and at lower power than copper wire. AUO, a major Taiwanese display-panel maker, contributes the large-area glass-processing expertise Intel needs to manufacture these packages at scale. The premarket 6% gain extended past 12% during regular trading as investors also cheered strong server-chip demand tied to the breakout popularity of Meta's Muse AI agent.
Why it matters
Intel has spent years losing ground to TSMC in advanced packaging, so this deal signals a credible push back into the high-value AI data center supply chain. Co-packaged optics — embedding optical connectors directly inside a chip package — sharply cuts the power needed to move data between processors, making it essential for next-generation AI hardware. If Intel and AUO reach production scale within their two-to-three year target window, the arrangement could chip away at the premium packaging business TSMC has built through its CoWoS platform.
