What happened

IBM (IBM) stock fell 4.32% to $227 on Thursday after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since 2023, making it the worst Dow performer as 2026 losses surpassed 35%. The Fed's 25-basis-point hike to a target range of 3.75%–4% drove the Dow down 631 points, with software stocks taking the steepest losses as rising rates compress the present value of future earnings. IBM had already posted its worst day since at least 1968 on July 14, when shares dropped 25% after Q2 revenue of $17.2 billion missed Wall Street's $17.9 billion estimate. Clients had diverted IT budgets from IBM's software and services toward hardware, CEO Arvind Krishna told investors.

Why it matters

IBM stock is the clearest sign that rising interest rates are directly hitting enterprise software companies, which were already losing clients to AI hardware spending. When rates rise, investors pay less for future earnings, which hurts software firms — which earn most of their money years from now — harder than most other sectors. The growing shift in corporate budgets from software subscriptions toward physical servers could reshape IBM's, Oracle's, and SAP's growth trajectories for years ahead.
