Shopify (SHOP) Falls 9% on Q3 GMV, Subscription Miss

Shopify (SHOP) shares dropped about 9% after hours as Q3 gross merchandise volume and subscription gross profit missed estimates despite 32% revenue growth.

  • Shopify shares fell about 9% after hours after GMV and subscription gross profit missed estimates.
  • Q3 revenue rose 32% to $3.742 billion, while free cash flow margin reached 22%.
  • Q4 guidance calls for low-thirties revenue growth and higher marketing spending.

Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ: SHOP) fell about 9% in extended trading on Tuesday, November 3, after the commerce software provider reported third-quarter gross merchandise volume of $119.15 billion, short of the $120.03 billion consensus, and subscription gross profit of $661 million against an expected $680.3 million. The misses overshadowed a quarter in which revenue grew 32% year over year and operating income rose 66%.

What Did Shopify Report for the Third Quarter?

Shopify reported revenue of $3.742 billion for the quarter ended September 30, up 32% from a year earlier, and roughly in line with a consensus near $3.75 billion.

Gross merchandise volume, the total value of orders processed on the platform, reached $119.15 billion. That is growth of 29% as reported and 30% in constant currency.

Merchant solutions revenue, which includes payments and other transaction-linked services, rose 35% to $2.906 billion and beat estimates. Subscription solutions revenue grew 20% to $836 million, below the roughly $848 million consensus. Monthly recurring revenue climbed to $230 million from $193 million a year ago.

Gross profit rose 28% to $1.781 billion. Operating income increased 66% to $568 million, and net income was $462 million. Free cash flow totaled $816 million, a 22% margin compared with 18% in the prior-year quarter. Cash and equivalents stood at $1.868 billion.

Why Did Shopify Shares Fall Despite 32% Growth?

Shares fell because the two metrics investors weigh most for the platform's quality of growth, volume and high-margin subscription profit, both came in under expectations.

Subscription solutions gross profit grew 16%, well behind the 20% growth in subscription revenue. Subscription gross margin was 79%, compressed mainly by incremental spending on Sidekick, Shopify's AI assistant for merchants. Efficiencies in customer support offset part of that pressure.

The GMV shortfall was about $900 million, less than 1% of the total. Shopify President Harley Finkelstein described the result as consistent and durable, noting it was the 13th consecutive quarter of GMV growth above 20%. With the stock priced for sustained outperformance, a small miss on volume and a larger one on subscription profit was enough to trigger a sharp reaction.

How Is AI Shaping Shopify's Strategy?

AI is both a cost line and a distribution channel for Shopify. The company is spending on merchant-facing tools such as Sidekick, which weighs on subscription margins, while also positioning its catalog for purchases initiated through AI agents.

Management said Meta Platforms (META) launched its Muse AI agent during the quarter with Shopify as an early partner. Finkelstein said AI agents are driving new traffic and helping shoppers discover niche products, and that prices are not being pushed lower as a result. The company expects mainstream use of AI-assisted shopping capabilities during the coming holiday season, which will be an early test of how much volume agent-led discovery adds.

What Does Shopify Guide for the Fourth Quarter?

Shopify guided for fourth-quarter revenue growth in the low-thirties percentage range, against analyst expectations of about 32.1%, with less than one percentage point of foreign exchange headwind.

Gross profit is projected to grow in the high-twenties percent range, slightly below revenue growth as the mix shifts toward lower-margin payments. Operating expenses are forecast at 29% to 30% of revenue, reflecting higher marketing spending. Stock-based compensation is expected at $155 million, and the free cash flow margin should be consistent with the fourth quarter of 2025.

The fourth quarter includes Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the busiest period for merchant volume on the platform.

Market Context

The after-hours decline follows a pattern in which high-multiple software and platform stocks are punished for narrow misses even when profit and cash generation improve. Shopify's margin expansion came from operating leverage, with operating income growing roughly twice as fast as revenue. The market's focus has shifted to whether AI investment erodes the subscription margin that supports that leverage.

Outlook

Shopify enters the holiday quarter with revenue growing above 30%, a 22% free cash flow margin, and guidance that matches expectations. The after-hours drop reflects the volume and subscription profit misses, plus higher marketing outlays and AI costs. Holiday GMV and the early results of agent-driven shopping will shape the next reading on volume, while the subscription gross margin trend will show whether AI spending is peaking or still building.
