What happened
CVS Health (CVS) stock rose 1.2% to $92.50 in after-hours trading on Tuesday after reports said it will spin off its retail pharmacies by the first half of 2028. About 9,000 drugstores, mail-order pharmacy and MinuteClinic sites would form a new company, CVS Pharmacy, while insurer Aetna and drug-benefit manager Caremark stay together. Shares had already closed up 3.28% at $91.41 before the news, and reports differ on the after-hours move, from 0.1% to as much as 3.7%. CVS reports quarterly results Wednesday, when it could confirm the plan.
Why it matters
CVS Health is one of America's biggest healthcare companies, and splitting off its drugstores would undo its $78 billion purchase of insurer Aetna in 2018. The drugstore arm brings in about a third of the company's $417 billion in yearly sales. The move comes as lawmakers press to separate drug-benefit managers from pharmacies and insurers, which could change how prescriptions are priced and sold.
