Kim Jong Un Crosses New Yalu River Bridge Into China

Kim Jong Un's surprise day trip over the New Yalu River Bridge to Dandong shows Beijing moving to reclaim influence over North Korea from Moscow as trade rises.

  • Kim Jong Un crossed the New Yalu River Bridge on Oct. 24, his first China trip in 13 months and sixth since 2011.
  • China-North Korea trade reached $2.27 billion in January-September, up from $1.9 billion a year earlier.
  • Xi Jinping did not meet Kim; Wang Huning, China's fourth-ranking official, hosted him.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un crossed the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge into the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026. The unannounced one-day visit came nine days after the 3 km span formally opened. It marks Pyongyang's most visible turn toward Beijing since North Korea committed troops and weapons to Russia's war in Ukraine. North Korean state media confirmed the trip on Sunday, after Kim had returned home over the same bridge.

What Happened During Kim's Visit to China?

Kim spent one day in Dandong, in Liaoning province, and met Wang Huning, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a member of the Communist Party's Politburo Standing Committee. Wang conveyed greetings from President Xi Jinping. Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu also took part. Kim's delegation included his sister Kim Yo Jong and Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui.

Kim and Wang walked across the bridge, toured an automobile factory and visited a memorial to Chinese soldiers killed in the Korean War. Kim pledged to "firmly carry forward the invincible DPRK-China friendship" and said the bridge would "correctly fulfill its historic mission of linking the two countries." A banquet followed, hosted at Xi's direction.

Xi was absent because a Communist Party plenum opens in Beijing on Oct. 26. The visit also fell one day before the Oct. 25 anniversary of China's entry into the Korean War in 1950. That date ties the trip to the shared wartime narrative both capitals use to frame the relationship.

Why Is Beijing Moving to Reclaim Influence Over Pyongyang?

Beijing is moving because Russia's military and economic alignment with North Korea has reached its highest level since the troop deployment to Ukraine, and that alignment has diluted China's leverage. China remains North Korea's largest trading partner and its main economic lifeline. Moscow's arms purchases and payments gave Pyongyang an alternative source of revenue and diplomatic cover.

The visit reverses part of that shift. Wang Huning travelled to Pyongyang in July for the anniversary of the two countries' friendship treaty, and Kim's last trip to China was in September 2025. China is now using trade, infrastructure and ceremonial access to restore its position as the senior partner. Kim has also framed the global situation as a "new Cold War" and has sought alignment with both Beijing and Moscow against Washington. That posture leaves him room to bargain with each.

What Does the New Yalu River Bridge Change for Trade?

The bridge adds a four-lane road link where only one aging crossing existed before. Finished in 2014 but left unopened for 12 years, it opened on Oct. 15. Until then, road and rail freight between Dandong and Sinuiju moved almost entirely over the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, built in 1943. That bridge has a single road lane and a 20-tonne vehicle limit. Expected capacity on the new span is about 20,000 vehicles and 50,000 passengers a day.

Trade was already rising before the opening. Bilateral trade in January-September 2026 reached $2.27 billion, against $1.9 billion in the same period of 2025. Chinese exports to North Korea rose 12.1% to $1.79 billion. Imports from North Korea jumped 50.4% to $483.57 million. Chinese rice shipments to the North rose nearly sevenfold in September alone.

International sanctions still cap what can legally cross the border, including restrictions on major North Korean export categories. Capacity therefore exceeds what permitted commerce can fill. Talks in Dandong focused on logistics, people-to-people exchanges and trade cooperation, which suggests Beijing intends to widen the permitted channels as far as it can.

Geopolitical Dimension

The timing places the visit between two diplomatic events. US midterm elections take place Nov. 3, and the APEC summit follows in Shenzhen on Nov. 18-19. Kim coordinated his approach to Washington with Beijing before the 2018-2019 summits with Donald Trump, and the Dandong trip restores that channel. Trump has recently downplayed the prospect of a meeting. Seoul is watching whether closer Chinese ties make Pyongyang less willing to engage South Korea.

For Moscow, the near-term effect is limited. North Korean troops and munitions remain tied to Russian war needs, and the Russia-North Korea treaty is intact. The change is in sequencing. Pyongyang is again sending its leader to Beijing first on infrastructure and trade, a role Russia cannot match in scale because China accounts for the bulk of North Korea's external commerce.

Outlook

Over the next three to twelve months, the bridge's traffic data and the next round of Chinese customs figures will show whether the opening produces a lasting rise in legal trade. The Party plenum in Beijing and the APEC summit in Shenzhen are the next points at which China can turn its renewed influence into diplomatic leverage. Kim has secured economic access from China without giving up the Russian partnership. Beijing has restored its place at the center of North Korea's foreign policy.
