Clorox (CLX) Q1 2027 Earnings Beat Lifts Shares 2%

Clorox (CLX) shares rose about 2% after fiscal Q1 2027 adjusted EPS of $1.55 and sales of $1.91 billion beat estimates, though costs cap the full-year outlook.

  • Adjusted EPS rose 82% to $1.55 against a $1.07 consensus; net sales rose 33% to $1.91 billion.
  • Gross margin fell 130 basis points to 40.4% on commodity, manufacturing and logistics costs.
  • Full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $5.70-$6.00 was held, with results now expected near the low end.

The Clorox Company (NYSE: CLX) reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 results on November 2, 2026, and its shares gained about 2% as adjusted earnings and revenue topped Wall Street forecasts. Adjusted earnings per share reached $1.55, 48 cents above the $1.07 consensus. Net sales of $1.91 billion exceeded the $1.88 billion estimate. The company kept its fiscal 2027 outlook intact but flagged a more difficult cost environment.

What Did Clorox Report for Fiscal Q1 2027?

Clorox reported net sales up 33% to $1.91 billion, with organic sales up 18% and adjusted EPS up 82% to $1.55. Diluted EPS rose 114% to $1.39.

Two factors drove the growth. The first was the comparison with the year-earlier quarter, when an ERP system transition forced retailers to draw down inventory and depressed shipments. Lapping that disruption lifted organic volume by 17% and added about 18 percentage points to organic sales growth. The second was the acquisition of GOJO, the maker of Purell hand sanitizer, which closed on April 1, 2026 and contributed about 15 percentage points to net sales growth.

Every reporting segment grew:

  • Health & Wellness: net sales up 62%, adjusted EBIT up 69%
  • Household: net sales up 17%, adjusted EBIT up 11%
  • Lifestyle: net sales up 16%, adjusted EBIT up 58%
  • International: net sales up 11%, adjusted EBIT up 63%

Operating cash flow for the period rose 54% to $143 million.

Why Did Clorox Shares Rise Despite Weaker Margins?

Shares rose because the earnings and revenue beat was wide and management held its full-year profit range rather than cutting it. The headline growth, however, was flattered by easy comparisons, and profitability beneath it was under pressure.

Gross margin declined 130 basis points to 40.4% from 41.7% a year earlier. Higher commodity prices and increased manufacturing and logistics costs outweighed record cost savings, higher volume and pricing actions. Chair and CEO Linda Rendle described the company as "focused on steadily improving performance while navigating continued input cost pressures," and said the cost environment has become more challenging.

The size of the EPS beat reflects the low base of last year's disrupted quarter as well as the contribution from GOJO, a higher-margin hygiene business now folded into Health & Wellness. The market's modest 2% response indicates investors weighed the beat against the cautious cost commentary.

What Does Clorox Expect for the Rest of Fiscal 2027?

Clorox expects fiscal 2027 net sales growth of 13% to 14%, including about 9.5 percentage points from GOJO, and organic sales growth of 3.5% to 4.5%. Excluding the ERP comparison, organic sales are projected to be flat to up 1% for the year, which points to a slowdown after the first quarter. For the second quarter, organic sales are guided to range from flat to down 2%.

On profit, adjusted EPS guidance stays at $5.70 to $6.00, a 3% to 8% increase, but the company now expects to land near the low end. Full-year gross margin is forecast at about 41.5%, down from the prior 41.7%, reflecting higher-than-normal inflation and negative mix effects. Input cost inflation is now projected at $240 million, up $40 million from the earlier estimate. The tax rate is expected at about 23%.

Strategic Context

The quarter shows the two forces shaping Clorox's current strategy. The GOJO deal broadens the company's presence in professional and consumer hygiene and adds scale outside its traditional bleach, cleaning and cat litter categories. The ERP transition, which disrupted shipments through much of the prior fiscal year, is now largely behind the company, and the year-over-year comparisons will normalize from the second quarter.

The central question for the coming quarters is whether cost savings and pricing can offset commodity and logistics inflation. Staples companies across household and personal care face the same squeeze, and Clorox's guidance implies that margin recovery will be gradual rather than immediate.

Outlook

Clorox delivered a clear fiscal first-quarter beat, with adjusted EPS of $1.55 and sales of $1.91 billion, but the strength came largely from easy comparisons and the GOJO acquisition. With organic growth expected to slow sharply in the second quarter and input cost inflation raised to $240 million, attention turns to how far cost savings can protect margins as fiscal 2027 progresses.
