Biogen (NASDAQ: BIIB) shares reached a new 52-week high on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, after JPMorgan (JPM) upgraded the stock to Overweight from Neutral. The bank raised its price target to $300 from $210, which implies about 33% upside from the prior close of roughly $226. Shares rose 2.1% in premarket trading and extended the gain to about 2.8% during the session, clearing the earlier 52-week peak of $230.49. The move placed Biogen among the stronger biotech company stocks this autumn. What Triggered Biogen's Move to a 52-Week High?
The trigger was a research upgrade built on pipeline timing rather than on any new company announcement. JPMorgan pointed to an increasingly dense calendar of clinical readouts and competitor data expected through 2027, with a target date of December 2027. The upgrade frames Biogen as more than a single-product story built around the Alzheimer's drug Leqembi.
The rating change reverses a more cautious stance. Biogen's multiple sclerosis franchise, historically its profit engine, continues to face pricing and generic pressure. The upgrade argues that the pipeline can outweigh that erosion.
Which Trial Readouts Matter Most?
The nearest catalyst is litifilimab in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), where two Phase 3 trials are due to report in the fourth quarter of 2026. On Oct. 2, Biogen reported 52-week Phase 2 data in cutaneous lupus from its AMETHYST study. A growing share of patients reached clear or almost clear skin between week 24 and week 52. Additional Phase 3 data for litifilimab in cutaneous lupus is expected in 2027.
An anti-tau therapy in Alzheimer's disease is also due to read out in 2026. Further catalysts in 2027 include:
- Felzartamab in antibody-mediated kidney transplant rejection (AMR), a market opportunity estimated at more than $2 billion.
- Zorevunersen in Dravet syndrome, a severe childhood epilepsy.
JPMorgan also flagged a possible read-through to Leqembi from Eli Lilly's (LLY) TRAILBLAZER-ALZ-3 trial. It views the probability of success there as high.
How Is Biogen's Business Performing Outside Leqembi?
Biogen's base business is growing modestly, while reported earnings are depressed by deal costs. Second-quarter 2026 revenue was $2.7 billion, up 3% from a year earlier. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were $3.60, against $5.47 in the prior-year quarter.
Biogen completed its acquisition of Apellis Pharmaceuticals on May 14, 2026. The deal added two commercial products, Empaveli and Syfovre, and extended the company into nephrology. Acquisition-related charges of about $3.00 per share and roughly $0.85 of dilution from the deal cut reported full-year non-GAAP EPS guidance to $12.00-$13.00, from $14.25-$15.25. Excluding those items, underlying guidance rose to $15.85-$16.85. Full-year revenue is expected to grow at a mid-single-digit rate.
Leqembi in-market sales reached $184 million in the quarter, up 15% year over year. U.S. sales were $97 million. The FDA approved Leqembi Iqlik, an at-home administration version, during the period.
Market Reaction
Trading followed the pattern typical of pipeline-driven upgrades: the bulk of the move came at the open and held through the session. A 54% twelve-month advance means much of the recovery in sentiment is already in the share price. The next leg depends on clinical results rather than on earnings, with the third-quarter report not due until late October.
Outlook
Biogen enters the final quarter of 2026 with its highest share price in a year and a defined readout schedule. The litifilimab SLE data is the first test, followed by the anti-tau result and the 2027 kidney and neurology readouts. Positive results would validate the upgrade thesis that the pipeline can offset multiple sclerosis erosion. A failure, particularly in lupus, would challenge the premise behind the $300 target.
