ASML Q3 2026: EUV Demand Outruns 2027 Capacity

ASML posted record Q3 2026 sales of €11.7 billion and said EUV supply for 2027 and 2028 will trail customer demand, yet its shares fell in New York trading.

  • ASML (ASML) reported record Q3 net sales of €11.7 billion, net income of €5.0 billion and a 57.5% gross margin.
  • Management said planned 2027 and 2028 supply will not fully meet customer demand and is weighing capacity beyond the 30% annual increases.
  • Full-year 2026 sales guidance is €44-45 billion. The shares fell 1.86% to $1,717.76 in the US session.

Lead

ASML reported third-quarter 2026 results before the US market open on Wednesday, October 14. The results addressed the main question for ai stocks tied to chip equipment: whether the 2027 order visibility behind record extreme ultraviolet (EUV) demand still holds. Total net sales reached a record €11.7 billion, up from €9.3 billion in the second quarter. Net income rose to €5.0 billion from €2.9 billion, and the gross margin widened to 57.5% from 54.0%. Basic earnings per share were €12.95, against a consensus near €10.76. Sales were in line with the €11.73 billion consensus.

What Happened in ASML's Third Quarter?

ASML delivered record sales, stronger profit and higher full-year guidance, with the beat driven by margin and service revenue rather than system volume alone.

The company sold 113 new lithography systems, up from 86 in the prior quarter, and 8 used systems. Installed Base Management, which covers upgrades and servicing of machines already in the field, generated €3.3 billion, about €400 million above guidance. Net income included a roughly €500 million revaluation gain on the company's investment in French AI developer Mistral.

Cash and equivalents climbed to €12.7 billion from €7.6 billion. ASML repurchased about €4.1 billion of shares in the quarter under its 2026-2028 program. It will pay an interim dividend of €1.88 per share on November 4.

Do Record EUV Bookings for 2027 Still Hold?

The order picture is stronger than before, though ASML no longer gives investors a quarterly bookings figure. The company stopped publishing quarterly net bookings after 2025 and now reports backlog annually. In July, it said 2027 low-NA EUV capacity was close to fully covered by orders.

Third-quarter commentary extended that position. ASML said supply as currently planned for 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet customer demand, and that customers are already expressing interest in orders for 2029 and 2030. Chief Executive Christophe Fouquet put it plainly: "30% in 2027, 30% in 2028 will not allow us to meet our customer demand. We have to do more."

The company expects to ship about 65 EUV systems in 2026, more than 50% above 2025. It plans to raise low-NA EUV and deep ultraviolet immersion capacity by 30% in 2027 and is studying further increases for 2028. The NXE:3800F scanner, arriving in 2027, lifts throughput from 230 to 260 wafers per hour.

Why Did Shares Fall Despite the Beat?

Shares fell because expectations were already elevated and the sector was under pressure before the report. ASML dropped 3.1% on Tuesday as semiconductor equities sold off on doubts about how AI investment is financed and on competitive pressure from China. The stock then fell 1.86% to $1,717.76 in the regular session on results day. Extended trading was weaker still.

The valuation left little room for a modest sales beat. Investors that invest in ai through equipment suppliers are pricing in sustained capital spending by chipmakers, so any sign of slower order momentum would weigh on the shares. The 2027 and 2028 supply shortfall points the other way, but it also signals that customers' capacity needs now exceed what ASML can build, which caps near-term growth.

Guidance and the China Exposure

ASML guided fourth-quarter net sales to €14.2-15.2 billion with a gross margin near 57%. Installed Base Management is expected to contribute about €3.7 billion. Research and development costs are guided near €1.2 billion and SG&A near €0.4 billion.

Full-year 2026 sales are now expected at €44-45 billion, up from earlier guidance, with a gross margin near 56%, a significant increase. China is expected to account for roughly 20% of 2026 business. That keeps export policy a live risk to a customer base otherwise dominated by leading-edge logic and memory producers.

What Comes Next for ASML and Chip Investors?

The next catalysts are the full-year backlog disclosure and any formal decision on capacity beyond 30%. A larger build-out would raise ASML's capital spending and supplier load before it lifts revenue. It would also lock in the multi-year demand visibility that management described as unseen "in many, many years."

For the sector, the report shifts the debate from whether orders exist to whether AI-driven customers can keep funding them. ASML's own commentary points to demand running ahead of supply through 2028.

Outlook

ASML closed the quarter with record sales, a wider margin and higher 2026 guidance, and it described EUV demand for 2027 and 2028 as exceeding supply. Share price reaction will turn on how well AI financing and China-related trade policy hold through the fourth quarter, when sales are guided to rise sharply to €14.2-15.2 billion.
