What happened
TSMC (2330.TW) stock fell 4.7% to NT$2,135 on Friday after opening limit-down, as AI regulation fears from the US midterms pushed Taiwan's Taiex into a bear market. Limit-down means the stock hit the biggest drop the exchange allows in one day at the open, before buyers returned. Taiwan's main index, the Taiex, closed 4.5% lower, leaving it down 12.2% this week, the worst since 1991. That puts it about 20% below its October peak, the usual mark of a bear market. Investors fear the US midterm results will bring tighter rules on AI data centers, cutting chip demand.
Why it matters
TSMC is the chip maker behind much of the AI boom, and it is so large that its moves can swing Taiwan's whole stock index. A bear market in Taiwan shows investors are doubting how long AI spending will last. Taiwan's regulator said it will limit short selling (betting that prices will fall) from November 9, and the government is ready to use a NT$500 billion fund to steady prices.
