What happened

AMD (AMD) stock rose about 8% to $520.40 in after-hours trading Tuesday after earnings showed data center sales nearly doubled to a record $8.55B and a fourth-quarter forecast of about $17B. Data center sales, which come from chips used in AI and cloud servers, rose 97% from a year earlier. Total sales of $13.4 billion beat the roughly $13.1 billion analysts expected, and adjusted profit per share of $2.09 topped the $1.95 expected. The company's own forecast (guidance) of about $17 billion compares with the $16.2 billion analysts had expected.

Why it matters

AMD sells some of the chips that power AI, so its results show how strong spending on AI data centers still is. Data center sales are now 64% of its total revenue, up from 47% a year ago. Its forecast implies sales about 66% higher than a year earlier, a sign that big customers such as Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI are still ordering heavily.
