What happened
Inovio (INO) stock soared 214% to $1.89 on Monday after the FDA granted accelerated approval to Voceryq, its first product and the first US-approved plasmid DNA immunotherapy. Voceryq treats recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), a rare disease where airway growths keep returning and need surgery. In a study, 7 of 26 patients (27%) needed no surgery for 12 months after treatment. Approval is conditional on a follow-up study, and shipping should start in about 60 days. Rival Precigen, which sells a competing RRP treatment, fell about 26%.
Why it matters
Inovio is a small company that now has its first approved product, which could change its finances after years of trading near lows. Voceryq is also the first US-approved medicine of its kind built on DNA. Patients with RRP gain another option, but its 27% surgery-free rate trails the 51% reported for Precigen's Papzimeos in separate trials, and the approval depends on a confirmatory study.
