What happened
Alibaba (BABA) stock rose 3.5% to $101.50 on Monday after Apple said its China AI features will run on Alibaba's Qwen models, launching in December. Qwen will power Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence on iPhones in China, and an early test version for software developers arrives on November 4. The stock jumped about 5% in morning trading before settling lower. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Tech index, which tracks big Chinese technology companies, gained 2.25% to 3,839.
Why it matters
Alibaba now has a high-profile customer for its Qwen AI, and Apple has a route to offer AI features to iPhone users in China after a wait of more than two years. Alibaba shares are still down about 29% this year, so Monday's gain is a partial recovery rather than a full one (per). The December launch will not include Apple's more advanced Siri upgrades.
