What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) fell more than 3% to about $110 on Monday after Trump signaled more time for Iran diplomacy, easing fears from last week's Hormuz tanker attacks. Iran's Revolutionary Guard says four tankers hit mines near the Strait of Hormuz from Oct. 29, while the US military says the main shipping lanes are clear. Only one attack is confirmed: a small boat stuck explosives (limpet mines) to the tanker Louise 1, the first such attack there since 2019. Brent had closed Friday at $117.64, its highest since April. Iran's army also warned that a new war could spread beyond the Middle East.
Why it matters
Brent crude is the world's main oil price benchmark, and it matters because about one-fifth of global energy supplies pass through the Strait of Hormuz. When ships are attacked there, oil can get more expensive, which can push up fuel and shipping costs for everyone. Prices are now swinging between war fears and peace hopes, and the US midterm elections on Tuesday could be a turning point.
