What happened
Exxon (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) stocks rose 1% to 2% to record highs near $187 and $235 on Friday after Q3 earnings of $15.4B and $9.9B, as Iran-war fuel shortages lifted refining profits. Exxon's profit doubled from $7.5B a year earlier, and Chevron's nearly tripled from $3.5B. Refining, the business of turning crude oil into gasoline and diesel, drove the jump because attacks on refineries and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz cut fuel supply. Both companies also beat Wall Street's profit forecasts.
Why it matters
Exxon (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) are two of the world's biggest oil companies, and their record profits show who gains when fuel is scarce. U.S. diesel reached $6.32 a gallon nationally, about 70% above a year ago, so what drivers and businesses pay feeds these profits. Exxon also set a $20B share buyback (buying back its own stock) for 2027. Profits could shrink if Iran talks reopen the Strait of Hormuz and fuel prices ease.
