What happened
Dow Jones (DJIA) rose 0.4% to 51,984 on Monday while the Nasdaq fell 1.1%, as investors rotated out of AI-heavy tech stocks after Oracle's $20 billion funding plan. Sherwin-Williams (SHW), a paint maker, rose about 5.9% and Home Depot (HD) 3.6%, as money moved into traditional companies. A report on factory activity also beat forecasts. Oracle (ORCL) fell almost 9% and Marvell (MRVL) 13% after agreeing to buy Lumentum in a $115 billion deal. Oil also dropped over 7% on hopes of US-Iran talks, which lowers costs for factories.
Why it matters
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rising while the Nasdaq falls shows investors shifting money from AI-heavy tech companies toward traditional businesses like paint makers and home-improvement stores. Worries are growing that tech firms are borrowing heavily to build AI data centers and may not earn that money back soon. For everyday investors, it is a reminder that funds full of big tech can move very differently from funds holding older industries.
