What happened
SpaceX (SPCX) stock rose about 1.2% to $136.37 by midday Monday after The Washington Post reported talks to buy EchoStar's Boost Mobile, a push to speed up Starlink Mobile. Elon Musk reportedly met EchoStar chief Charlie Ergen last month about buying Boost, which has about 7.4 million customers, or using its network. Boost rents that network from AT&T and T-Mobile, which may need to approve any deal. SpaceX and EchoStar shares were up about 4% early but the gains shrank by midday. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile were slightly higher then.
Why it matters
SpaceX (SPCX) wants its Starlink Mobile service, which mixes satellite and ground networks, to compete with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Buying Boost Mobile would give it millions of ready-made customers instead of building from scratch. Those three carriers reportedly turned down SpaceX's requests to buy network capacity, and they may still have a say. Nothing is agreed; the talks are only reported so far.
