What happened
China's Shanghai Composite (000001.SS) rose 1.1% to 3,638.03 on Monday after reports regulators would meet banks on stock support, steadying Asian markets following Friday's tech rout. China's central bank and two financial regulators planned to meet major banks to improve a loan program that helps companies buy back their own shares. The CSI 300, a gauge of big Chinese companies, fell 8.5% in October after a record 12 weekly drops in a row. The central bank also said 31 brokers and funds asked for over 100 billion yuan ($15 billion) to buy stocks, with bidding on Tuesday.
Why it matters
Chinese stocks have fallen for a record 12 weeks in a row, so Beijing's move to fund share buying matters for savers, companies and nearby markets. Backing from the central bank can calm prices, but it does not by itself fix whatever is pulling shares down. The calm also follows Friday's US tech sell-off, which erased more than $1 trillion from big tech companies and unsettled markets worldwide.
