What happened
Stryker (SYK) stock fell about 12% to $275 in after-hours trading on Thursday after an earnings miss and a cut to its 2026 profit outlook tied to slower hip and knee surgeries. Stryker makes joint implants, surgical robots and hospital equipment. Its adjusted profit was $3.52 a share, just under the $3.55 analysts expected, while sales rose 7.7% to $6.5 billion. The company now expects 2026 profit of $14.80 to $14.90 a share, down from $14.95 to $15.10. Management blamed fewer hip and knee procedures as patients face higher costs, plus supply problems in blood-vessel products.
Why it matters
Stryker is one of the biggest makers of hip and knee implants, so its warning suggests fewer people are choosing joint surgery as health costs rise. Management now sees the U.S. hip and knee market growing only about 2.5% this year, well below recent years. Shareholders saw the stock drop from a $311.75 close to about $275 in after-hours trading, a move that can change once regular trading opens.
